Example letter to state representative or senator
requesting s/he cosponsor the Reproductive Privacy Act.
Dear Representative (Her name):
I would like you to cosponsor the
Reproductive Privacy Act sporsored by Representative Sara Feigenholtz.
Counting on Roe v. Wade to protect a
woman's right to make reproductive decisions without government
interference is just too risky. If Roe is overturned the Illinois
Abortion Act of 1975 (720ILCS510) could make abortion unavailable to
Illinois women and subject Illinois doctors to criminal charges.
We can't risk going back to the days before
Roe. Before Roe it is estimated that between 200,000 and 1.2 million
illegally induced abortions occurred annually . As many as 5,000 to
10,000 women died per year following illegal abortions and many other
suffered sever physical and psychological injury. Using the before
Roe percentages (Center for Reproductive Rights, 2007) and data on
abortion in Illinois (Guttmacher, 2002) that could mean that 636 to
3,184 Illinois women would die if abortion were illegal.
I urge you to cosponsor the Reproductive
Privacy Act to protect
women's lives.
Sincerely;

Example letter to state representative or senator
requesting s/he cosponsor the Reproductive Privacy Act.
Dear Representative
I would like you to cosponsor the
Reproductive Privacy Act sponsored by Representative Sara Feigenholtz.
The Reproductive Privacy Act
ensures that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a
child or to choose and to obtain an abortion and that every individual
has the fundamental right to choose or refuse to use birth control
including emergency contraception.
Making abortion illegal or hard to
get doesn't stop women from having them. History has shown that women
worldwide, when faced with an unwanted pregnancy, seek abortions
regardless of the legality of the procedure. This legislation would
protect between 636 to 3184 Illinois women per year who would seek and
die from illegal abortions (Center for Reproductive Rights, 2007)
Risks of legal abortions have been
greatly exaggerated. In fact the childbirth is more dangerous. The risk
of death associated with childbirth is about 12 times as high as that
associated with legal abortions.
Keeping the right to reproductive
privacy is a matter of saving women's lives. I urge you to support the Reproductive Privacy Act.
